CAMERA Turin presents an anthological exhibition dedicated to Robert Doisneau, among the great photographers of the 20th century

CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin presents an anthological exhibition dedicated to Robert Doisneau until Feb. 14, 2023, with more than 130 photographs including the most iconic images and lesser-known shots.

Until Feb. 14, 2023 CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia is hosting an anthological exhibition dedicated to Robert Doisneau, among the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Curated by Gabriel Bauret and promoted by CAMERA, Silvana Editoriale and Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo, the exhibition presents more than 130 of the author’s photographs in an itinerary that includes his most iconic images alongside lesser-known shots, selected from the more than 450,000 negatives in his archive. Beginning with his most famous photograph, which depicts a young couple kissing at the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville in Paris, the exhibition chronicles his career through the recurring themes he addressed over more than 50 years: war and liberation, work, love, children’s games, leisure, music, fashion, and artists.

On display in the exhibition are more than 130 black and white silver salts prints all from the collection ofAtelier Robert Doisneau in Montrouge, south of the French capital, his place of creation and discovery. It was in this atelier that the photographer printed and archived his images for over fifty years, leaving a legacy of an incredible amount of prints and negatives.

The exhibition is divided into eleven thematic sections: Children; Occupation and Liberation; Postwar; The World of Work; Street Theater; Interior Scenes; Porter Shops; Portraits; A Certain Idea of Happiness; Bistrot; and Fashion and Worldliness.

Rounding out the exhibition is avideo interview with curator Gabriel Bauret and the screening of an excerpt from the film made in 2016 by the photographer’s granddaughter, Clémentine Deroudille: Robert Doisneau, le révolté du merveilleux (Robert Doisneau. The Lens of Wonder), which helps to deepen our understanding of the man and his work. The documentary chronicles his early newspaper publications, his experience within Renault, the occupation and liberation, the happy postwar years, the Paris banlieue, and the birth of his most iconic photography. A number of archival recordings present the photographer inside his own workshop, contributing, along with the director’s narrative voice (which tells of the great author with the affection of a proud granddaughter) to create the feeling of intimacy and proximity that Doisneau’s photographs themselves generate between the viewer and the subjects portrayed.

To encourage the participation of an ever-widening public, CAMERA has devoted special attention to the theme of accessibility in the exhibition. Thanks to the valuable collaboration with the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome and the Omero State Tactile Museum in Ancona, the exhibition includes a path dedicated to people with visual impairments that includes relief drawings and related audio descriptions. In addition to these aids, a calendar of free tactile tours guided by specialized operators will also be offered.
