Damien Hirst returns this year with a new exhibition, in England

Damien Hirst returns with a new exhibition in Norfolk, England: showcasing paintings that develop research on spot paintings.

After the big show in Venice, one of the most talked-about exhibitions of 2017, British artist Damien Hirst (Bristol, 1965) will return to the spotlight with a new exhibition, opening in March 2018 in the county of Norfolk, southern England. The venue for the exhibition will be Houghton Hall, an 18th-century residence built near the village of Houghton for the then Prime Minster Robert Walpole. The exhibition will be titled Damien Hirst at Houghton Hall: Colour Space Paintings and Outdoor Sculptures and will run from March 25 to July 15, 2018. On display will be new paintings that develop Hirst’s famous spot paintings made in the 1980s and 1990s.These will be less orderly works than their earlier counterparts, and were produced by the artist’s team in workshops in Devon, London, and Gloucestershire. In all, there will be about fifty works on display at Houghton Hall.

The curator of the exhibition, Mario Codognato, said that Hirst’s works “will literally replace the ancient masterpieces in Houghton Hall and will be shown as if they were ancient paintings, in a very different way than in white cube galleries.” The idea is to establish a contrast between Houghton Hall’s antiquity and Damien Hirst’s disorienting “stains.” Lord Cholmondeley, owner of the mansion, said that this “is perhaps the first time Hirst has shown a significant core of works in the context of a country residence. William Kent’s interiors will be transformed for the duration of the show.” However, this is not the first time Houghton Hall has hosted a contemporary art exhibition. For Damien Hirst, however, it is an unprecedented venue.
