Eielson's knots, magical symbols of union between past and present, on display in Rome

On display at the Instituto Cervantes in Rome from January 23, 2020, will be Jorge Eielson's knots, the centerpiece of the Peruvian artist's production.

The Jorge Eielson: Art as a Knot, Knot as a Gift II exhibition, curated by Martha Canfield and Antonella Ciabatti, will be on view in the Sala Dalí of theInstituto Cervantes in Rome from January 23 to February 29, 2020.

Organized by Centro Studi Eielson and Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with Istituto Italo Latinoamericano (IILA) and the Real Academia de España, the exhibition presents twenty-seven original works by Jorge Eielson (Lima, 1924 - Milan, Italy, 2006), a Peruvian artist and writer and member of the Generación del 50.

This is the second version of the exhibition: the first version was held in 2008 in Florence, with a presentation by Mario Vargas Llosa. The exhibition testifies to the artist’s creative variety: visual and sound poetry, installations, paintings, and canvas sculptures; central to his production is the knot. For him it is a magical symbol between the visual and verbal dimensions, a sign at once archaic and modern. With the knot, movement stops, the canvases become fixed, time interrupts its course and the soul, free of all anguish, concentrates in contemplation. Through his visionary images and poems, Eielson invites the audience to unite past and present, I and not-I, joy and sorrow.

Four thematic appointments will accompany the exhibition: on Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m., Enzo Minarelli and Martha Canfield present the performance La materia sonora: Omaggio a Jorge Eielson, followed by a poetry reading in Spanish and Italian.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, from 11 a.m., there will be a literary walk curated by Alessio Brandolini, inspired by the poetic collection Di stanza a Roma: starting from Piazza Navona, places and monuments that give title to the poems in this collection will be walked, revealing the links between the artist and the city. And again, on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 11 a.m., there will be a children’s workshop Essere artista: now it’s my turn! This will be A sensory journey for families with children, curated by Laura Del Conte and Alessandra Maggio. Registration is required for these two events by writing to cultrom@cervantes.es.
Finally, on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m., at the finissage of the exhibition, a number of works by Peruvian artists Elisenda Estrems and Nani Càrdenas, curated by Marco Benacci, will be presented, which will dialogue with Eielson’s works.

Hours: Wednesday through Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Free admission.
