Escher is also on display in Catanzaro: the great artist was fascinated by Calabria

From Nov. 20, 2018 to Jan. 20, 2019, Catanzaro is hosting the exhibition 'Escher. Calabria, the Myth' that discusses the region's influences on the Dutch artist.

Already the protagonist of an exhibition bearing his name in Naples( newshere ), Maurits Cornelis Escher (Leeuwarden, 1898 - Laren, 1972) will be the focus of another exhibition open from Nov. 20, 2018 to Jan. 20, 2019 in Catanzaro entitled Escher. Calabria, the Myth. Curated by Federico Giudiceandrea and Domenico Piraina, the exhibition will be staged at the San Giovanni Monumental Complex and will aim to show the influence that Calabria, its landscapes and architecture conveyed to the Dutch painter, who stayed in the region in the 1930s.

The exhibition will display 86 works by the artist, including Fuochi d’artificio (1933) and Sogno e Senglea (1935) exhibited in Italy for the first time, as well as Morano, Pentedattilo and Rocca Imperiale (all dated 1930), but also views of Scilla, Tropea, Santa Severina and Rossano (dated 1931): all works inspired by his stay in Calabria.

There will also be a touch screen that will allow visitors to see the places Escher traveled through and the memories he jotted down in his diary. The images of Calabria, as indeed those of the entire peninsula, remained indelible in the artist’s mind and future works, to the point that Dream, from 1935, features the praying mantis drawn in Pentadattilo five years earlier.
“The City of Catanzaro,” comment Mayor Sergio Abramo and Deputy Mayor, Ivan Cardamone, Municipal Councillor for Culture, “is proud to be able to host this major exhibition that will turn the spotlight on the regional capital for two months, recognized as a point of reference for the cultural scene in Calabria and the South. The objective that has animated this initiative, which has seen a complex organizational machine set in motion with the synergy of various public and private entities, has been to project our city at the center of the broadest national cultural circuits, contributing to making Catanzaro talked about in positive terms. A great event, dedicated to an artist appreciated all over the world, which we are convinced will be able to generate a strong relapse in terms of image, economic induced, growth and cultural development for our territory.”

Produced and organized by theCity of Catanzaro and theCatanzaro City Department of Culture with Arthemisia Group and the contribution of the Region of Calabria, the exhibition is in collaboration with the M.C. Escher Foundation.
