Ferrara, Palazzo dei Diamanti reopens with Banksy exhibition

Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara starts again with Banksy: an exhibition on the British street artist opens from May 30 to September 27, 2020.

Entitled Un artista chiamato Banksy (An Artist Called Banksy ), the exhibition with which Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara reopens its doors to the public today, Saturday, May 30, is the first in the new course of the Ferrara Arte Foundation, which has been chaired by Vittorio Sgarbi since the end of 2019, who took the helm of the entity that manages the city’s culture following the last elections that saw the victory of Alan Fabbri of the League, the new mayor of the Emilian city.

The exhibition, which runs through Sept. 27, brings together more than 100 original works and objects by the British artist to account for his entire output. Twenty years of activity from the earliest paintings to the works of the fake playground Dismaland set up in 2015 in Weston-super-Mare in England, passing through the stencils and silkscreens that Banksy considers vital in spreading his message. There will be no shortage of silkscreens of his most famous works such as Girl with Balloon and Love is in the Air. The exhibition will also include works in spray and acrylics on plywood from the early 2000s, as well as a work such as CCTV Britannia (a spray on perforated steel from 2009), which transforms the spear of the female figure personifying the British nation into a support for a CCTV camera, a message against the control exercised over public spaces, Banksy’s favorite places for his actions.

The exhibition is curated by Stefano Antonelli and Gianluca Marziani, according to whom, “Banksy questions concepts such as uniqueness, originality, authorship and, above all, the truth of the work by outlining a new vision on the relationship between the work and the market, establishing, in fact, a new statute of the work of art, a new truth of art itself, that is, the original work that is not marketable.” Banksy, Marziani explains, “goes beyond the very art we have known so far. He reformulates its rules, customs and habits, recreating a supply chain that eliminates the production funnels of the traditional model. Banksy uses tools and materials we all know, without losing adherence to physical and tangible objects, with simple and almost banal forms, with a lo-fi method devoid of fantasy utopias. Everyone understands it in that it uses the grammar of objects and the syntax of shared stories. It feeds on news and reality, reversing stories that touch all humanity.”

This is an unofficial exhibition (in fact, it has not been authorized by Banksy), with material gathered for the occasion from private collections, although the artist has been informed of the exhibition. Of course, Palazzo dei Diamanti is also complying with the new anti-Covid regulations: in particular, entrance to the exhibition is restricted and will be allowed to a maximum of 15 visitors every 15 minutes; wearing a mask is mandatory for all visitors aged 6 and older; interpersonal distance of at least 1 meter must be maintained at all times; and assemblages must be avoided; it is recommended to sanitize hands with the appropriate disinfectants found along the route; it is forbidden to enter for those with a body temperature of 37.5° or higher; it is recommended to avoid contact with common surfaces, as well as touching eyes, nose, mouth and face.
