Florence, at Forte Beldevere the unpublished works of Nico Vascellari

June 24 at Forte Belvedere will see the opening of MELMA, an exhibition by Nico Vascellari (Vittorio Veneto, 1976) curated by Sergio Risaliti, director of the Museo Novecento, promoted by the City of Florence and organized by MUS.E, and the first stage of a major project by the artist for the city of Florence.

Until October 8, 2023, previously unseen works, conceived especially for this occasion and made with different media, such as video, sculpture, collage, installation and sound, will be on view at Forte Belvedere. On the outside of the Fort, on the ramparts, nine sculptural works cast in aluminum will be installed in addition to two videos presented inside the “gunboats,” while the interior rooms will be occupied by an exhibition itinerary with over thirty works that, playing on very different registers, will offer a broad overview of Vascellari’s work focusing on the relationship between man and nature, existence and transcendence.

MELMA will be developed in October with several interventions in some of the most prestigious places of the city’s historical-artistic heritage. Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and the Museo Novecento will host a series of works, including a new installation for the Arengario, a site-specific performance conceivedby the artist for the Salone dei Cinquecento and a series of works in the former Leopoldine building, taking into account the peculiar relationship between Renaissance and contemporary, between the public space of the square and the Salone dei Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio.

In Piazza della Signoria,contemporary art will return. Fioretti is the site-specific installation conceived by Nico Vascellari for the Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio, inspired as much by Renaissance images, such as those of Botticelli’s flowering meadow, as by the verses of Poliziano and Pasolini. The title of the work is to be understood in the triple meaning of the term foil as weapon, act of renunciation and small flower. The installation will be inaugurated on October 3, 2023. On the same day, Vascellari will present Alessio, a performance designed for the Salone dei Cinquecento that aims to reflect on the conventions and codes of nonverbal communication.

Finally, at the Museo Novecento, a selection of videos made by the artist in recent years will be presented.
