From Canaletto to Guardi, Venetian vedutismo is on stage in the principality of Monaco

From Dec. 20, 2017 to Jan. 20, 2018, the Art Contact gallery in the principality of Monaco is hosting an exhibition of Venetian vedutisti, from Canaletto to Francesco Guardi.

It opened last Dec. 20 and runs through Jan. 20, 2018, for The magical light of Venise, an exhibition that brings works by some of the great masters of eighteenth-century Venetianvedutismo, including Canaletto, Michele Marieschi, Francesco Guardi, and Bernardo Bellotto, all of whom are featured in the Monegasque exhibition, to the Art Contact Gallery in Monaco. The works arrive in the principality thanks to London’s Cesare Lampronti Gallery, the exhibition’s organizer.

“The masters of vedutismo are all present,” reads the exhibition presentation, "with key works that symbolize the essence and pure splendor of Venice. The desire to eternalize their environment encouraged the demand for landscapes, known as ’vedute,’ which offer the contemporary viewer a living glimpse into the tastes, culture and economy of the time. The dissemination of prototypes through engravings, especially those ofAntonio Visentini, beginning with his series Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum (1735-1742), inspired by the work of Canaletto, decisively influenced the development of the genre, and later sparked several debates regarding originality and reproduction in the work of art." The exhibition also aims to explore the link between Vedutism andEngland (among Canaletto’s great patrons was the English diplomat Joseph Smith, thanks to whose interest the Venetian artist also spent a stay in London).

The exhibition is open daily, except Sundays, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Art Contact gallery is located at 6 avenue Saint Michel. The exhibition is open to the public.
