From Nov. 3, seven frescoes by Giandomenico Tiepolo unveiled to the public for the first time

At the Palladio Museum in Vicenza, seven frescoes by Giandomenico Tiepolo will be unveiled to the public for the first time from November 3.

Seven important frescoes by Giandomenico Tiepolo (Venice, 1727 - 1804), once housed at a private residence of the Valmarana family, are the works that will be unveiled to the public for the first time at the exhibition Secret Tiepolo, from November 3, 2017 at the Palladio Museum in Vicenza. The seven frescoes were created by Giandomenico Tiepolo, son of Giambattista, twenty years after the Villa Valmarana ai Nani undertaking, commissioned by Giustino Valmarana from him and Giambattista: Giandomenico executed the frescoes for his son Gaetano’s home, “adopting,” reads the presentation, “no longer the light and playful register of rural life but the courtly, monochrome but nonetheless darting language of Palladio’s nearby architecture.”

It is indeed a Tiepolo dialoguing with Palladio’s architecture that will be on view from November 3. Moreover, these are frescoes that, unlike others in Vicenza, were saved from destruction during World War II. Their current owners, Camillo and Giovanni Franco, descendants of the Fausto Franco who oversaw the rescue of the frescoes in 1945, have decided to set them aside for public enjoyment. “A laudable and very timely initiative, in view of the actual destruction that Tiepolo’s frescoes suffered in Vicenza during the war,” says Fabrizio Magani, director of the Verona Superintendency and curator of the exhibition together with Guido Beltramini, director of the Palladio Museum. He adds, “It is therefore important that today a very important part of the surviving Tiepolo becomes accessible to the public.”

The exhibition, which can be visited during the opening hours of the Palladio Museum in Vicenza, will have a catalog with essays by Magani, Beltramini, Luca Fabbri, Maristella Vecchiato and Giovanna Battista. On the occasion of the exhibition, to expand the opportunity to learn more about Tiepolesque painting, there will be reduced-price admission to the Villa Valmarana ai Nani, and vice versa, visitors to the Villa will have a discount on their Palladio Museum ticket.
