GAM in Milan showcases the greatest artists of Divisionism

Milan's GAM presents an exhibition on Divisionism from November 19, 2021 to March 6, 2022, with works by the greatest Divisionist artists from the collections of GAM and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona.
From November 19, 2021 to March 6, 2022, GAM | Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Milano offers the exhibition Divisionism. 2 collections, curated by Giovanna Ginex in collaboration with GAM. The exhibition aims to illustrate the characteristic features of the Divisionist experience, its protagonists and artists, through thirty works, present in the collections of GAM and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona, set up in five rooms of the Milanese museum venue. Among the artists on display are Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Giulio Branca, Luigi Conconi, Tranquillo Cremona, Carlo Fornara, Giuseppe Grandi, Emilio Longoni, Angelo Morbelli, Plinio Nomellini, Giuseppe Pellizza, Gaetano Previati, Attilio Pusterla, Daniele Ranzoni, Giovanni Segantini, Giovanni Sottocornola, and Paolo Troubetzkoy.
Milan was a key city for Divisionism: here many of the movement’s artists studied, here many of them found inspiration for works of social denunciation, here they exhibited for the first time at the Brera Triennale in 1891. Canvases set in Milan, at that time in the midst of industrial growth and characterized by profound urban, architectural and social changes, became for the Divisionists spaces in which to investigate the theme and icons of contemporaneity, progress and old and new marginality.
The exhibition was born out of a desire to offer a new insider’s look at Divisionism; a desire that led the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona to promote a new publication: theAlbum of Divisionism by Giovanna Ginex, out in bookstores from Electa to coincide with the exhibition. The richly illustrated album will collect the words and direct accounts of the Divisionism artists themselves, critics, and the Italian and foreign press of the time. The publication reflects some of the cornerstones of the Pinacoteca di Tortona: dynamism, the search for new languages, creativity, intergenerational dialogue, and visitor involvement. It will feature the sources of Divisionism, coeval materials of the main artists, articles and images from the newspapers of the time: that is, it will be the protagonists of that era and their contemporaries who will take the floor to confront, sometimes even with irony and lightness and in period clothing, with contemporary readers and visitors.
