GAM Turin, Flavio Favelli brings together and revisits all the Masters of Color Fabbri Editori

Flavio Favelli has brought together in the rooms of the Wunderkammer of the GAM in Turin the 278 monographic fascicles of the well-known series "I Maestri del Colore" by Fratelli Fabbri Editori and revisited them using gilded maps. May 26 through November 6, 2022.

GAM in Turin presents in the rooms of the Wunderkammer the exhibition I Maestri Serie Oro by Flavio Favelli, open from May 26 to November 6, 2022 and curated by Elena Volpato. The project is a winner of the public notice PAC2020 - Plan for Contemporary Art, promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

A single work composed of the 278 monographic fascicles of the well-known series I Maestri del Colore by Fratelli Fabbri Editori, which came out on Italian newsstands between 1963 and 1967, will be exhibited. The fascicles represented for many Italian families a symbolic object, a declaration of belonging to a growing social stratum, crossed by a desire for culture and well-being.

Flavio Favelli worked on each of the iconic covers, interacting with their formal elegance, with their balance between graphics and photographic cutting of pictorial details. He used one or more gilded Ferrero Rocher maps to conceal portrait faces, anecdotal scenes, and portions of paintings, frescoes, and mosaics in which the human figure stands out. Favelli intended to restore reproductions of great works of art to a state of impenetrability, of closed sacredness. However, while concealing parts of works behind the glow of gold, it also opens to a panoptic view the unfolding of art history as Fabbri’s publishing adventure was able to tell it.

The 278 fascicles are displayed in three rows occupying the entire space of GAM’s Wunderkammer. Being able to see all the covers of the series brought together in a single room seems to enhance the encyclopedic spirit to which Fratelli Fabbri’s publishing venture tended, but Favelli’s choice to break up the lines of the drawing, to complicate the two-dimensionality of the painting, to conceal the sense of completeness and perfection that emanates from many of those works, suggests a more contrasting relationship with the history and value of the past. It expresses acontemporary aesthetic restlessness, for which fullness of meaning and form is never given and each master is at once acknowledged and obliterated, the object of a sincere and at the same time fake celebration, as fake is Favelli’s gold leaf: shimmering, but paper.

The work I Maestri Serie Oro, which becomes part of the museum collections, represents a new development in Favelli’s work, which in recent years has repeatedly investigated the theme of gold in multiple forms.

Fondazione Ferrero Onlus collaborated with and supported the exhibition.
