Heart of Darkness, a group exhibition to reflect on irrational aspects of the contemporary

The OGR - Officine Grandi Riparazioni in Turin hosts the exhibition Heart of Darkness / Heart of Darkness. Can art prevent mistakes?

The OGR - Officine Grandi Riparazioni in Turin in collaboration with the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea is offering the exhibition Heart of Darkness / Heart of Darkness from February 1 to May 19, 2019. Can Art Prevent Mistakes?

The exhibition, set up at Binario 2 of OGR Turin and curated by Marcella Beccaria with the support of the Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, is a group show that aims to investigate irrational aspects of the contemporary, where wars, imperialism, religious fanaticism, terrorism, racism, inequality growing, overexploitation of natural resources and some aspects of technology and Artificial Intelligence used irresponsibly seem to be growing exponentially. The title recalls Joseph Conrad ’s famous novel Heart of Darkness, published in 1899.

The artists in the exhibition offer multiple points of view related to the complexity of the world in which we live, questioning the dark sides of the present and analyzing them through references to the past or anticipating possible future scenarios. The artists’ works range from performance, sculpture, photography, painting, film, and multimedia and sound installations; among the names featured are Allora & Calzadilla, Maria Thereza Alves, Maurizio Cattelan, Roberto Cuoghi, Bracha L. Ettinger, Massimo Grimaldi, Mona Hatoum, Goshka Macuga, Teresa Margolles, Pedro Neves Marques, and Wael Shawky.

“With references ranging from the fall of the Assyrian Empire in 7 B.C. to the androids that may one day share the Earth with humans, the exhibition investigates the contemporary world by probing some of its dark and irrational aspects. The selected works propose different forms of critical awareness that do not disregard the ability to open spaces of poetic resistance, responding to the violence of the present with unstoppable creative force,” said the curator.
