In Lecco, an exhibition traces the history and legacy of Scapigliatura

From September 19, 2020 to January 10, 2021, Palazzo delle Paure in Lecco is dedicating an exhibition to Scapigliatura.

From September 19, 2020 to January 10, 2021, Palazzo delle Paure in Lecco presents the exhibition La Scapigliatura. A Generation Against, curated by Simona Bartolena.

The intent of the exhibition is to retrace the history of Scapigliatura, a movement that developed in the second half of the 19th century, through eighty works created by its major exponents, such as Tranquillo Cremona, Daniele Ranzoni, and Giuseppe Grandi.

The paintings and sculptures on display, from public museums and private collections, will allow visitors to delve into aspects of this movement, which expanded from literature to other disciplines.

The exhibition will be divided into sections to investigate the various moments and exponents of Scapigliatura, offering a reflection on its origins with works by Giovanni Carnovali known as Piccio, Federico Faruffini and other artists, as well as a section devoted to the movement’s legacy, a point of reference for future Divisionists such as Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and Giovanni Segantini.

Beginning with the visual arts, the exhibition will offer a well-rounded account of Scapigliatura, coming to consider other forms of expression, in a game of cross-references in which the macabre and dark themes of literature accompany the light and flowery tones of painting and the thematic realism of sculpture. The movement born between Milan and Turin, but with international attitudes, developed in a troubled and unstable climate.

In addition, the exhibition will offer focus on the role that Scapigliatura played in the cultural development of the Larian territory, both in the Lecco area around the figures of Antonio Ghislanzoni and Amilcare Ponchielli, and in the Como area where Villa Pisani-Dossi stands, owned by the writer Carlo Dossi (1849-1910), a protagonist of literary Scapigliatura, and designed by the painter, engraver and architect Luigi Conconi (1852-1917), who is also present in the exhibition with numerous works.
