In Pistoia a major anthological exhibition dedicated to Aurelio Amendola, between ancient and contemporary

From February 8 to July 25, 2021, the Fondazione Pistoia Musei is dedicating a major anthological exhibition to Aurelio Amendola, featuring nearly three hundred shots.

Fondazione Pistoia Musei presents from February 8 to July 25, 2021, at the two venues of Palazzo Buontalenti and Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi, the anthological exhibition Aurelio Amendola / An Anthology. Michelangelo, Burri, Warhol and the Others dedicated to one of the greatest contemporary Italian photographers.

The exhibition is intended as a tribute to the career of Aurelio Amendola (Pistoia, 1938) told through nearly three hundred shots. A skillful experimenter of unprecedented juxtapositions between the ancient and the contemporary, his images are of strong intensity and grace.

The exhibition is divided into two large parts, Ancient and Contemporary, linked by continuous figurative cross-references, tracing more than sixty years of activity and all the genres in which the author experimented, explored in depth by specific sections of the exhibition.
This is the first exhibition to bring together almost the entire output of the celebrated photographer, allowing the public to understand his figurative coherence, his connection with the classical tradition, with art history and photography, and with the great contemporary masters.

His shots testify to his love for the ancient: famous are his images dedicated to Michelangelo, Canova, Bernini, Jacopo della Quercia, Donatello and Giovanni Pisano, but also his passion for the contemporary with portraits of Burri, de Chirico, Warhol, Manzù, Vedova, Ceroli, Lichtenstein, Kounellis and many others.
Photographer of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Uffizi, the Vatican Museums, FMR magazine, Vittoriale degli Italiani, and numerous other national and international museum institutions, linked to many artists of the twentieth century, Aurelio Amendola is a world-renowned author whose photography is not reduced to simple reproduction, but is akin to sculptural practice, its plastic harmony: it is volume and sensuality.

Amendola’s photography is a poetic act: far from the documentary model, it is never an aesthetic object, but carnal and spiritual, meditative and seductive.

The exhibition is curated by Paola Goretti and Marco Meneguzzo and has the patronage of the City of Pistoia.
