In Shanghai, Fondazione Prada presents Michael Wang's environmental-themed exhibition

Prada Rong Zhai in Shanghai is hosting Michael Wang's exhibition project, Lake Tai, with support from Fondazione Prada, from March 30 to May 29, 2022. It addresses the theme of profound environmental change in that area.

From March 30 to May 29, 2022 Prada Rong Zhai, a historic residence in Shanghai built in 1918, restored by Prada and reopened in 2017, hosts the exhibition Lake Tai, a project by Michael Wang (Olney, Maryland, 1981) supported by Fondazione Prada. Wang addresses universal themes in his production, such as climate change, the spread of species, the distribution of resources and trade in the world economy. For this project, the artist has created a series of works that explore the natural and cultural heritage of the Tai Lake region and investigate the tradition of Chinese landscape art.

In particular, he presents a series of sculptures and installations set up on the second floor and in the garden of Prada Rong Zhai. The works are inspired by the reclamation works that have transformed the lake and river in recent years. The project aims to investigate the theme of redefining the relationship between man and nature in an era of profound environmental change.

The Tai Lake region is home to China’s most famous historic gardens-it is an area that celebrates the harmony between man and nature. In recent decades, this relationship has been dramatically altered by global phenomena such as climate change, mass extinction, and large-scale natural resource extraction. The Tai Lake area is witnessing this radical transformation. Since the late 1990s, the presence of seaweed has colored the lake green, but in recent years, extensive restoration efforts have cleaned up the waters.

The exhibition, particularly the Taihu (Stones) series, grew out of research carried out in collaboration with students from Tongji University in Shanghai who supported the artist in exploring the site, collecting materials, testing and producing the works. Their collaboration focused on experimenting with new sustainable materials created from organic and industrial waste.
