In Stupinigi, for the first time in Italy the exhibition of Marilyn Monroe in the shots of Sam Shaw

Through Sept. 18, the Palazzina di Caccia in Stupinigi is hosting for the first time in Italy the largest selection of shots of Marilyn Monroe taken by Sam Shaw, on the 60th anniversary of the actress' death.

Face to face with Marilyn Monroe, the diva of divas, model for generations and timeless icon. For the first time in Italy, the largest-ever selection of photographs taken by Sam Shaw of Marilyn Monroe is on display to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the actress’ death: shots in both black and white and color, in her private life and backstage at her most successful films. It runs from July 2 to Sept. 18 at the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi (Turin).

Visitors will find Marilyn winking at the beach, swaddled in a white one-piece swimsuit or applying makeup in the mirror, or even divinely dressed in red, intent on drinking a cup of tea, exchanging loving glances with husband Arthur Miller. There will be no shortage of iconic photographs from the set of When the Wife is on Vacation in which the air from the grates of the New York subway lifts the skirt of Marilyn’s white dress revealing her legs.

The visitor has the chance to get to know the most hidden side of Monroe, the ironic, ever-smiling woman in perpetual pursuit of happiness, despite the great wounds inflicted on her by life since she was a child.

The exhibition recounts many anecdotes and lesser-known curiosities about Marilyn, in an engaging display in which photographic images alternate with aphorisms-dedicated to the feminine, human universe and the relationship with fame and celebrity-still extremely relevant today. The central theme is the relationship between man and woman and the diva’s constant spasmodic search for love. In particular, the relationship between Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, U.S. playwright and screenwriter, her third husband, is narrated in the documentary Artists in Love, in collaboration with SKY Arte, the exhibition’s media partner.

Also among the treasures on display are the incredible memorabilia on display, owned by German co-curator Ted Stampfer, the world’s largest collector of objects by and about Marilyn, acquired at auctions-among them Christie’ s and Julien’s -that since 1999 have made public Monroe’s personal possessions, which until then had been locked in boxes, stored in New York.

More than sixty pieces of memorabilia will be on display at the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi: beauty items, dresses, shoes, the diva’s original airline tickets, photos and personal and props, such as the legendary fan, used for the film When the Wife is on Vacation (original title: The Seven Year itch). For the first time in Italy, the very script of this film will be on view. And as a world premiere, the original photo of Monroe, who emerges transfixed from the St. Regis Hotel in New York, just before the iconic subway scene is filmed.

Also for the first time in Italy is the love letter to Arthur Miller, the dress worn by Marilyn during her very marriage to the screenwriter, and the tube of glue with which the diva applied her false eyelashes.

Regarding the collection of memorabilia, carefully chosen in correlation with Shaw’s shots, Ted Stampf eraaffirms, “These objects bring individual moments from 1950s photo shoots to life and make tangible for visitors the real woman hidden behind the successful film actress and fashion icon. These unique pieces offer us a pristine glimpse into Marilyn’s life and allow us to get closer to her true identity, a truth that has survived to this day. Because Marilyn’s influence in the film industry as in fashion, lifestyle and photography has united generations, making her one of the most important cultural and historical figures of the 20th century.”
