In the forests of the Val di Non gigantographs suspended ... among the trees

Until September 5, 2021, the exhibition Suspended Tales is running in the woods of Malosco: giant photographs of the inhabitants of Val di Non suspended in the trees.

Until September 5, 2021 in the woods of Malosco in Val di Non, among the greenest and most unspoiled spots in this corner of Trentino, the exhibition Suspended Tales is underway. The open-air exhibition consists of a series of portraits taken by Christian Tassoduring a month-long residency in Val di Non. The works of the photographer and documentary filmmaker are the result of his encounters with the inhabitants: in fact, he took a series of intense portraits of them on film, in which natural elements also often play a prominent role. Oversized prints were hung among the trunks and branches of conifers and other plants, tracing a path for visually striking images. Suspended among the trees, the fifteen works materialize an extraordinary harmony and attunement with the surrounding nature and give the atmosphere of the forest a duplicated spatiality.

The portraits fit into an unusual space with almost no continuity between the green of the prints and that of the trees, evoking a very strong triangulation between the forest landscape, the territory and the people portrayed, who share a great love for the mountains. “The installation is a symbolic act,” said the photographer, “in many situations it is not clear where the forest ends and the photograph begins, which seems to float in the air among the trees, creating a very evocative effect that immediately brings to the viewer’s eyes the message of fusion between human beings and nature.”

The common element that characterizes all the people portrayed by Tasso is that of a lifestyle centered on a close contact with nature, and the cue that the installation intends to offer, also thanks to the sense of freedom conveyed by an open and boundless exhibition space, is to make people reflect on the importance of preserving the bond with nature, but also with the territory in which they live.

Known for his sensitivity to social issues, the photographer started precisely from these ties and spent a lot of time with farmers, mountain men and women, and young shepherds in Val di Non, where the phenomenon of “return” has recently been created: there are many people who, after having lived far from the valley, with study and work experiences in large Italian and foreign cities, have returned to their places of origin to reactivate a deep interaction with the territory, often also with the recovery of activities related to tradition.
