Kicking off the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition in Milan. Here are some of the works on display

The major exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec opens in Milan. The Fleeting World, dedicated to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. At the Royal Palace, from October 17, 2017 to February 18, 2018.

It kicks off on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, the major exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec. The Fleeting World with which the city of Milan, in the prestigious venue of Palazzo Reale, celebrates the genius of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Albi, 1864 - Saint-André-du-Bois, 1901). More than two hundred works, including thirty-five paintings, arriving from the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi and major international museums, all twenty-two posters created by the French artist, along with studies and preparatory sketches, the only painted self-portrait (the 1880 Portrait in the Mirror ), the entire Elles series, an introspective look at the family, a historically contextualized itinerary, and much more: the exhibition is rich and allows for a decidedly broad overview of Toulouse-Lautrec’s art.

“The novelty introduced by Toulouse-Lautrec to the contemporary world,” we read in the exhibition presentation, “was the way of depicting artists and dancers through an affiche. He was the first to perceive the need to invent a new ’style’ for that new, typically urban artistic genre that is the poster. Showing himself susceptible to the influence of Japanese prints, Lautrec employed impetuous lines, bold compositional cuts, intense and flat, ringing colors that, applied evenly over extensive surfaces, made the poster visible even from a distance, easily recognizable at first glance and, above all, attractive to the potential consumer.”

Below we offer a selection of works that the public will be able to admire at the Royal Palace. The exhibition, curated by Danièle Devynck and Claudia Beltramo Ceppi Zevi, runs through Feb. 18, 2018.
