Livorno, an exhibition on Ermenegildo Bois, the artist who moved to India in 1900

Livorno's Museo Civico Fattori dedicates an exhibition to Ermenegildo Bois, an artist active between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, who left Tuscany in the year 1900 to move to India, where he stayed a full 19 years.

An exhibition dedicated to a little-known artist active between the 19th and 20th centuries, namely Ermenegildo Bois (Livorno, 1863 - 1933). From Oct. 10 to Oct. 31 at the “Giovanni Fattori” Civic Museum in Livorno, the Green Drawing Room presents to the public the focus Ermenegildo Bois. An Uncommon Wit between Livorno and Calcutta, organized in view of the 160th anniversary of the birth of the painter and sculptor who saw the light in Livorno on Oct. 21, 1863. On this occasion, the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum decided to temporarily exhibit the works of this significant artist, about whom, however, little and confusing information is preserved to this day.

“Said young man is gifted with uncommon ingenuity: and, encouraged and aided in the necessary expenses of the art he has undertaken under such happy auspices, he may one day be a pride to his country,” so wrote the important sculptor Augusto Rivalta of the Labronian artist. Bois initially trained under Natale Betti of Leghorn, then distinguished himself for talent at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. Despite his successes at a young age, in his more mature years he attempted to make a career in academia, but was unsuccessful. He thus decided to move for a long period to India, to Calcutta (1900-1919), assisted by the Bahadur marahja Sir Joteendra Mohun Tagore, obtaining many important commissions. In 1919 he returned to Leghorn, where he participated in the Labronico Group and in city life, but did not repeat his success in India.

The small exhibition showcases a selection of works from the deposits of the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum: a nucleus of sculptures The Scream, Indian Divinity, and portraits of Adolfo Chayes and Luigi Sgrilli, some paintings and documents. The exhibition route will also be open during the days of Harborea - Festa delle Piante e dei Giardini d’Oltremare, which will be held in the Villa Mimbelli park on Oct. 13-15. The route will remain open throughout the month of October and can be visited with the normal ticket price of the Fattori Museum.

The initiative is organized by the City of Livorno with the collaboration of Agave Cooperative, Itinera Livorno Cultura e Turismo and CoopCulture.
