Lorenzo Lotto and Giacomo Leopardi: Sgarbi curates the dialogue you don't expect in Recanati

The exhibition 'Solo, senza fidel governo et molto inquieto de la mente. Lorenzo Lotto dialogues with Giacomo Leopardi,' curated by Vittorio Sgarbi.

A very special exhibition that Vittorio Sgarbi is curating in Recanati, at the Museo Civico di Villa Colloredo Mels: Solo, senza fidel governo et molto inquieto de la mente. Lorenzo Lotto Dialogues with Giacomo Leopardi is the title of the exhibition, which, as one can easily guess, will stage an unprecedented dialogue between the Venetian painter Lorenzo Lotto (Venice, 1480 - Loreto, 1556/1557), who was, however, active for a long time in the Marche region, and Giacomo Leopardi (Recanati, 1798 - Naples, 1837). Two restless souls, an artist and a poet who toured Italy albeit two centuries apart, two geniuses who achieved the greatest recognition only after their demise, two men who shared places: in fact, Lorenzo Lotto executed for Recanati the Transfiguration and the great polyptych for the church of San Domenico, works now preserved at the city’s civic museum.

The exhibition, open from December 21, 2017 to April 8, 2018, showcases some important works by Lorenzo Lotto in Recanati: in addition to the works housed at the Museo Civico di Villa Colloredo Mels, namely the Transfiguration, the celebrated Annunciation, the Polyptych of Recanati and the Saint James the Greater, the Portrait of a Young Gentleman from the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, a Fall of the Titans and a Gentleman with a Letter from a private collection, and the Portrait of Ludovico Grazioli from the Cavallini Sgarbi Foundation arrive in the Marche region. Also on display are documents and memorabilia by Giacomo Leopardi (including some letters and the manuscript of the Essay on the Popular Errors of the Ancients).

The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the Villa Colloredo Mels Civic Museum: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. The Pinacoteca is closed for exhibition set-up from December 15 to 20.
