Major retrospective devoted to Albrecht Dürer opens tomorrow in Milan

Major retrospective Dürer and the Renaissance between Germany and Italy opens to the public tomorrow in Milan's Royal Palace

Opening to the public tomorrow, Feb. 21, is an exhibition featuring the works of Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528), a leading figure of the German and European Renaissance, and his contemporary German artists. Prominent names include Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Baldung Grien, Hans Burgkmair and Martin Schongauer.

Also featured are Italian painters, draftsmen and graphic artists who worked between Milan and Venice, such as Titian, Giorgione, Andrea Mantegna, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Bellini, and Andrea Solario.

The major retrospective exhibition"Dürer and the Renaissance between Germany and Italy," which can be visited until June 24, 2018 in the Royal Palace in Milan, will thus present visitors with about 130 works, including 12 paintings by Dürer, as well as three watercolors and about 60 drawings, engravings, books, and manuscripts.

There will also be an opportunity to understand the German Renaissance and artistic relations between northern and southern Europe in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, as well as the religious and spiritual debate inherent in Dürer’s works and his relationship with patrons.

Among the works on display are the Half-length Portrait of a Young Venetian, Jesus among the Doctors, and The Melancholy.

The exhibition is curated by Bernard Aikema with the collaboration of Andrew John Martin and is produced by Palazzo Reale and the City of Milan-Cultura.
