The MART Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto is hosting for the first time in Italy the entire collection of works by Giacomo Balla belonging to the Biagiotti Cigna Foundation and the private collection of Laura and Lavinia Biagiotti.

In Giacomo Balla. The Style of the Avant-Garde. Works from the Biagiotti Cigna Collections, curated by Beatrice Avanzi and Fabio Benzi and open to the public from May 16 to Oct. 18, 2026, will feature about 200 works, including paintings, design objects, clothing and artifacts, through which the path of the futurist master who, together with Fortunato Depero, in 1915 elaborated the manifesto of the Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe. Animated by the idea of total art and the desire to overcome traditional distinctions between disciplines, Balla extended his artistic language beyond painting, applying it to furniture, objects and even fashion. Dynamic and vibrant forms, from the swirls of speed to the abstract arabesques of moods, thus transformed even the elements of everyday life.

Balla’s research attracted the interest of Laura Biagiotti, a famous fashion designer, collector and patron. Together with her husband Gianni Cigna, she started a collection of the artist’s works and objects beginning in 1986, giving rise to one of the most important private monographic collections dedicated to Balla.

Her daughter Lavinia Biagiotti C igna is responsible for the establishment of the Biagiotti Cigna Foundation: the third generation at the helm of the Biagiotti group, Lavinia continues her mother’s commitment to the enhancement of culture and the protection of artistic heritage.

At Mart, this Biagiotti family collection will enter into dialogue with the museum’s permanent collections, which have always focused on the historical avant-garde and in particular on the work of Fortunato Depero, whose legacy contributed to the very birth of the institution.
