Masterpieces from Piero della Francesca to van Gogh at the Quirinale, for the 50th anniversary of the Cultural Heritage Protection Command

From May 5 to July 14, 2019, the Palazzo del Quirinale is hosting, in the halls of the Palazzina Gregoriana, the exhibition L’arte di salvare l’arte. Fragments of Italian History, curated by Francesco Buranelli. The exhibition is being held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Comando Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale, the specialized department of theCarabinieri established on May 3, 1969, to combat crimes to the detriment of our historical and artistic heritage.

On display will be some of the most significant cultural goods recovered in half a century of intense and fruitful investigative activity, along with works returned to the national artistic heritage thanks to the cultural diplomacy action implemented in concert with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.

Visitors will be able to admire objects that were stolen from churches, museums, archaeological sites, libraries and archives, while learning about the history of their recovery; the exhibition will also display some of the goods secured in the areas of central Italy affected by the dramatic earthquake events of 2016. Specialized staff will guide visitors along the exhibition route and in consulting the database available online.

Among the masterpieces on display are Piero della Francesca’s Madonna of Senigallia , Euphronios Crater, Trapezophoros, the Capitoline Triad, Vincent Van Gogh’s The Gardener, Paul Cézanne’s Le Cabanon de Jourdan, Castellani Goldsmiths, and Andrea Mantegna’s Holy Family with a Saint.

The conception and design of the installation is by Michelangelo Lupo, and the exhibition catalog is published by De Luca Editori d’Arte.
