McCurry's Afghan girl comes to Veneto for the first time

Palazzo Sarcinelli in Conegliano is hosting an exhibition of Steve McCurry's most iconic images. Starting Dec. 23, 2020.

From Dec. 23, 2020 to May 2, 2021, the iconic images of renowned photographer Steve McCurry will be on display in Conegliano, Italy, at Palazzo Sarcinelli.

For thefirst time in the Veneto region, more than one hundred photographs will be presented at Icons, tracing McCurry’s multiple artistic and reportage experiences, from his early travels to India and Afghanistan.

Through his lens, the photographer focuses on the humanity of the subject: with his shots he conveys the human face that lurks in every corner of the earth.

On display are his greatest icons: portraits, images of war, non-Western cultures. His images are pure poetry, capable of arousing suffering and joy, astonishment and irony.

The engine of his research is curiosity, which drives him to cross all physical, linguistic and cultural boundaries.

In portrait photography Steve McCurry succeeds in fully expressing his style, and each of his photos tells a story capable of communicating the complexity of an entire context. Famous is the Afghan girl, who has become a symbol of the tragedy of Afghanistam and the dignity with which her people have faced war and exile. The photograph was taken in Pakistan, near Peshawar, in a space for refugees, and was first published in 1985.

The exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti and is organized by Artika in collaboration with Sudest 57 and City of Conegliano.
