Mickey Mouse turns 90: an exhibition in Desenzano del Garda celebrates his birthday

Mickey Mouse turns 90: from November 10, 2018 to February 10, 2019, an exhibition in Desenzano del Garda celebrates the birthday of the famous Disney mouse.

On November 18, 2018, Mickey Mouse turns 90 years old! To celebrate the respectable milestone reached by the famous mouse, many initiatives are taking place around the world. In Italy, for example, an exhibition at the medieval castle of Desenzano del Garda(Brescia, Italy) curated by Disney expert and historian Federico Fiecconi opens from November 10, 2018 to February 10, 2019, who explains: "This exhibition intends to engage visitors in the most significant moments of the art of the original Mickey Mouse, a collective work born from the creative genius of Disney and his partner, animator Ub Iwerks, and made immortal by the creativity of great artists, many of them Italian and still working today."

Mickey 90 - The Art of a Dream, this is the title, is set up by GraFFiti Creative and is an itinerary articulated on the two floors of the Castle, seven rooms in which more than three hundred pieces from collections, important private collections from all over the world and from the archives of Disney itself find their place. These include precious Mickey Mouse artwork created by its most famous cartoonists (from Floyd Gottfredson to Paul Murry, from Luciano Bottaro to many others) and an exceptional, extremely rare autograph drawing of the famous character that sprang from Walt Disney’s pencil. Also present are dozens of comic strips and the original illustrations of the American masterminds and their European colleagues; splendid animation drawings from the most memorable film roles, including even an original drawing by Iwerks from the debut film Steamboat Willie and one from the unforgettable episode The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Fantasia (1940), accompanied by the theatrical program of the time autographed by Walt Disney himself. Also of great interest are collectibles, vintage toys, bronze and ceramic figurines, pins, albums, volumes, stamps and rare toys and editions. Also noteworthy are No. 1 of the very rare Giornale di Topolino published by Nerbini in 1932, the first title in the world dedicated to the character, the first Mondadori publications (1935, still in newspaper format), the first issue in albetto format (1949) from the archives of WOW Spazio Fumetto - Museo del Fumetto in Milan or the very rare Frassinelli volume edited by none other than Cesare Pavese (1933), as well as rare pocket and wrist watches from the 1930s.

Ample space is given to what is considered the greatest Disney artist in activity, the Venetian master Giorgio Cavazzano, whose drawing table the exhibition leads to discover. Also on the walls of the Castle are ironic and precious works with which the Artists of the Disney Academy celebrated Mickey Mouse, Minnie and co. by painting them in the manner of Klimt, Botticelli and Van Eyck. A tribute also reciprocated by contemporary artists capable of frequently portraying the hero of the Disney House: the exhibition is also punctuated by modern reinterpretations of the 1930s by leading contemporary artists(Tosh, Marco Fantini and others).
The screening and events room will host presentations, meetings with authors and many videos to watch and review.

The storytelling will also continue outside the Castle walls, thanks to installations in the streets and squares. All will tell the stories of key authors and works of the glittering Mickey Mouse epic. In short, as Sport and Tourism Councillor Francesca Cerini points out, "three months full of surprises in full ’Disney style.’ For example, atEpiphany we will have a special Epiphany under the sign of Minni."

The exhibition is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other openings are planned during vacations and school vacations. Ticket price: full 8 €, reduced 5 € (up to 12 years old). For school classes: 3 € per student, teachers free. Info on the Garda Musei website.
