From Dec. 3, 2025, to Jan. 31, 2026, Cadogan Gallery in Milan welcomesVenticinque, the first Italian exhibition of Gabriele Cappelli (Forlì, 1972; living in London since 1997), who for the occasion presents a new series of paintings inspired by emblematic works and themes that have marked his career. Cappelli approached art from a very young age: frequent sojourns in Rome, during visits to his architect and designer grandfather, introduced him to painting, the core of his creative practice.
In 1997, at the age of twenty-five, he moved to London, where he chose to devote himself completely to artistic activity, influenced by the Young British Artists movement. In this period he developed a strong interest in painting understood as an investigation of chromatic composition: a process of experimentation, study and combination of colors that allows him to give life to unexpected balances. It is in the British capital that Cappelli progressively defines his own research.
As also recounted in Francesco Zippel ’s documentary Gabriele Cappelli (2024), his works arise from thejuxtaposition of unusual hues with which the artist builds abstract compositions, seemingly free but founded on precise and conscious thought. Color, the focus of his work, has no descriptive function: it “speaks for itself.” Form determines its proportions and balance, generating visual harmonies or tensions. The use of waxes and powders reminiscent of the luster of gold, mixed with oil paints, gives his works a sense of deep calm and harmony.
Represented for more than a decade by Cadogan Gallery, Cappelli boasts the presence of his works in numerous private collections in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. With Venticinque, celebrating his 25th anniversary, the artist presents a series of new works conceived specifically for the Milan spaces, reinterpreting some of the most significant themes and inspirations of his production.
