Parma2020: in dialogue the animal world of Ligabue and Vitaloni

Palazzo Tarasconi in Parma will host the exhibition Ligabue and Vitaloni from March 2 to December 27, 2020. Giving Voice to Nature.

As part of Parma Italian Capital of Culture 2020, Palazzo Tarasconi will host the exhibition Ligabue and Vitaloni from March 2 to December 27, 2020. Giving Voice to Nature, curated by Augusto Agosta Tota, Marzio Dall’Acqua and Vittorio Sgarbi and produced by Fondazione Archivio Antonio Ligabue of Parma.

The exhibition is based on the common interest of Antonio Ligabue (Zurich, 1899 - Gualtieri, 1965) and contemporary artist Michele Vitaloni (Milan, 1967) in the animal world and human nature. Both, in their art, are influenced by the instinctive and primordial side to approach the human and animal spheres.

Seventy-two paintings and four sculptures by Ligabue will be on public view, comprising self-portraits, landscapes, wild and domestic animals, and fifteen plastic works by Vitaloni.

A significant nucleus of Ligabue’s works will be devoted precisely to the natural world, especially to the animal kingdom: both that of the lower Po Valley, where the daily routine of hard work in the fields or simple rural life is illustrated, and the wild world, where tigers, lions, leopards, and hyenas are protagonists. Among these works on display are Leopard with Buffalo and Hyena (1928), Tiger Assaulted by Snake (1953), King of the Forest (1959), Black Widow (1951).

The artist’s legacy reaches into contemporary art: there will be large-scale sculptures created by Michele Vitaloni, an exponent of Wildlife Art and sculptural hyperrealism, which refer to a fascination with the wild animal world in which human nature is reflected.
