Picasso's Bathers. An exhibition in Lyon on the theme between comparisons and influences

The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon presents from July 15, 2020 to January 3, 2021 the exhibition Picasso. Baigneuses et baigneurs.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon opens on July 15 the exhibition Picasso. Baigneuses et baigneurs, dedicated to the theme of bathers, and will remain open to the public until Jan. 3, 2021.

The exhibition aims to offer a reinterpretation of the theme of bathers in Pablo Picasso’s work, while also presenting works by 19th-century artists who influenced the painter in dealing with this subject. Other artists who were Picasso’s contemporaries or followers will likewise be present to provide an understanding of how the latter’s bathers were a source of inspiration or to create a kind of comparison and dialogue between the various interpretations.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Musée National Picasso-Paris and the Guggenheim Foundation in Venice and curated by Sylvie Ramond, general director of the Lyon Art Museums Pole; MBA MAC, director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon; and Émilie Bouvard, scientific and collections director of the Giacometti Foundation in Paris. The idea for the exhibition came from Femme assise sur la plage, a Picasso work linked to the museum since 1997 thanks to actress-collector Jacqueline Delubac and which has become one of the icons of the museum’s modern art collection.
