Sibylline masterpieces from Marche on display in Milan

The exhibition 'Sibylline Masterpieces. Le Marche and the Places of Beauty,' at the cloisters of Sant'Eustorgio, through June 30, 2018.

Paintings have arrived in Milan for the exhibition "Sibillini Masterpieces. Le Marche and the Places of Beauty." These works, 56 in number, come from the areas of Le Marche affected by the 2016 earthquake (particularly the Sibillini Mountains) and will be on display at the Chiostri di Sant’Eustorgio from Dec. 21, 2017 until June 30, 2018.

The exhibition will celebrate art ranging from the Renaissance to the 18th century, starting with Corrado Giaquinto’s "Maga," which will serve as the as a pathfinder for the exhibition, then moving on to Perugino ’s “Christ of the Passion” and Antoniazzo Romano’s "Saint Catherine," to the seventeenth-century saints by Simone de Magistris, a pupil of Lorenzo Lotto and a leading exponent of Italian Mannerism, and to the panel of the “Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria” from Ghirlandaio’s workshop.

There will also be vivid still lifes, such as those that made Cristoforo Munari famous, portraits, mythological scenes and solemn representations of battles, emblematic of a territory marked by centuries-old divisions and rivalries. Along five sections, each dedicated to the fragile beauty of a different geographical area, we will also see the works of artists such as Fortunato Duranti, Vittore Crivelli, Cristoforo Unterperger, Ignazio Stern, Nicola Ulisse da Siena and Vincenzo Pagani.

Curated by Daniela Tisi and Vittorio Sgarbi, the event aims to show how Marche was the crossroads of important cultural routes and the cradle of talents destined to deploy their influence in the Peninsula’s greatest artistic centers, from Venice to Rome and Tuscany. All information can be found on the Sant’Eustorgio Cloisters website.
