Te veo, me veo: Lidia Léon's solo exhibition at the Church of Santa Maria della Presentazione

The Church of Santa Maria della Presentazione in Venice will host the exhibition Te veo, me veo by artist Lidia Léon from May 9 to September 30, 2019.

The exhibition Te veo, me veo by Lidia Léon (Santo Domingo, 1962) will be on view at the Church of Santa Maria della Presentazione or of the Zitelle, in Venice, from May 9 to September 30, 2019.

The exhibition, curated by Roberta Semeraro and Iris Peynado, will present Lidia Léon’s artistic production that focuses on social and existential issues, such asintolerance and cultural deficiencies. The very work that gives the exhibition its title is intended to invite visitors to recognize themselves in the Other through historical and philosophical references.

The Wabi Sabi series, on the other hand, is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic perception of the same name that celebrates the beauty inherent in impermanence and imperfection, looking beyond appearance.

The installation will have a circular pattern to refer back to Palladio’s dome, where the central work Te veo, me veo will dialogue with the side works Wabi sabi in a continuous play of cross-references.

“Many of my proposals promote social inclusion through play, releasing tension, stimulating imagination. Inviting the public to interact with my works feeds that social need of humans, promotes a space of respect for our differences, thus countering discrimination of all kinds,” says Lidia León.

“In the views found in the places where the artist has lived, I have found signs of that timeless beauty that is truer and more democratic because it is closer to all, which Lidia speaks of and which she invites us to rediscover and reappreciate. Indeed, it seems that the Dominican artist feels an unavoidable duty to his society, seeking to return his innate talent and creativity to the public. León’s works not only reflect the beauty of his land and the vitality of his people, but also the profound values of this splendid civilization composed of people who have come over time, from all parts of the world,” adds curator Roberta Semeraro.

The exhibition is sponsored by the LiLéon Foundation and theItalian Embassy in Santo Domingo.

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 8 p.m.
