The Fortress of Bard has reopened with an exhibition on the history of the Aosta Battalion

Dedicated to the Aosta Battalion is the exhibition with which the Fortress of Bard (Aosta Valley) reopens its exhibition activities.

The exhibition halls of the Fortress of Bard’s Museum of Fortifications and Borders are hosting the display of memorabilia belonging to the historic Shrine of the Aosta Battalion and the 4th Alpine Regiment, until now kept inside the “Cesare Battisti” Barracks in Aosta.

The exhibition The Memory of the Aosta. The Shrine of the 4th Alpine Regiment presents 124 of the most representative and significant pieces of the history of the Aosta Battalion and the 4th Regiment: among them, the historical diaries of the Battalions, letters and photographs from the front, period uniforms and personal belongings that belonged to those who made the history of the Battalion and the Regiment. The exhibition is organized by the Fortress of Bard and theItalian Army ’s Alpine Training Center with Gianni Ardoino for research activities and is curated by Gianfranco Ialongo and theFortress of Bard Association.

The moral and material promoter of the Shrine was Colonel Carlo Rossi, commander of the 4th Alpine Regiment from 1927 to 1934. Even before the Testa Fochi barracks was built, Rossi promoted the research and collection of materials, with the aim of honoring the memory and sacrifice of the Alpine soldiers who took part in World War I. These were hundreds of artifacts that found their place in the Shrine inside the Testa Fochi Barracks on an official basis starting May 18, 1940.

The wartime events of the early 20th century had imprinted an indelible mark on those who had lived through them. They found in the Military Institution the will to build a memorial in which the sufferings and heroism, through the objects, photographs and documents preserved, had a useful space to transmit the values and historical memory of the actions that saw the 4th Alpine Regiment as a protagonist. Former Alpine soldiers, soldiers in arms, families of fallen soldiers and civilians contributed over time to the enrichment of the Memorial.

The exhibit will remain at the Fortress of Bard until May 31, 2022.
