The true origin of street art on display in Cremona: Keith Haring and Paolo Buggiani

In the spaces of the Violin Museum in Cremona, the true origin of street art is staged: a wide selection of works by Keith Haring and Paolo Buggiani born from the extraordinary encounter between the two, immersing visitors in the New York of the early 1980s.

From November 7, 2021 to March 4, 2022, the Violin Museum - Amati Pavilion in Cremona hosts the exhibition Made in New York. Keith Haring + Paolo Buggiani (& Friends). The True Origin of Street Art.

Curated by Gianluca Marziani and Stefano Antonelli, the exhibition is part of Cremona (Stra)Contemporanea, a contemporary art exhibition sponsored by the City of Cremona and hosted at the Violin Museum.

"Keith Haring and Paolo Buggiani, an unusual pair of urban visionaries who land in Cremona in the magnificent spaces of the Violin Museum,“ comments Marziani. ”Together with them we are catapulted to the backdrop of early 1980s New York, where the two met in that human short circuit that mixed urban settings with artistic experimentation. The Italian senses the American’s brilliance and talent to the point that, as an ante litteram collector, he detaches from the walls and then keeps about fifty Subway drawings, thus giving us the first works in chalk made by Haring on the black posters that covered expired advertisements."

The extensive selection of works by Keith Haring and Paolo Buggiani grew out of the extraordinary meeting between the two. About twenty original works by Keith Haring, created on subway walls between 1981 and 1983, will be on display at the Violin Museum. Expanding the itinerary will be more than forty pieces by Paolo Buggiani on his projects in New York, to document and symbolically traverse the Big Apple. A third section will be devoted to Buggiani’s fellow artists, such as David Finn, Richard Hambleton, Ken Hiratsuka, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Les Levine, and David Salle, with original works from the 1980s. Finally, a selection of original posters, photographs and video documents will be seen.

On the occasion of the exhibition Paolo Buggiani will set up some of his animals in light sheet metal: crocodiles, snakes and other reptiles will be placed in the museum spaces. A large section of the exhibition will chronicle the art of Paolo Buggiani, the first to grasp the role of urban action as a social and linguistic phenomenon. On display will be dozens of photographs documenting his performances and installations in New York.

Hours: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
