From May 22 to Sept. 8, M77 Gallery in Milan presents "Gypsoteca," a series of new works by Agostino Iacurci (Foggia, 1986). Painter, illustrator, engraver, muralist and set designer, Agostino Iacurci has created a site-specific exhibition project for the spaces of M77 Gallery, proposing it as the culmination of a nearly two-year research around the theme of color as it was conceived and used in the practice of ancient statuary.
The starting point of Iacurci’s research is Greco-Roman sculpture seen in the practice that originally fused the specific materials of sculpture - marble, bronze, wood or terracotta - with color, thus creating a whole that time and an artificial antiquarian taste has somehow altered if not actually erased, thus giving way to an idea of classicism made of aseptic marble whites or monochromatic patinas.

With Gypsoteca, therefore, the artist wanted to create a contemporary personal catalog of antiquity, far removed from the neoclassicism and monochrome exalted and codified in the 18th century by the visionary Joahnn Joachim Winckelmann.

Gypsoteca, a title that explicitly refers to the place where plaster models of ancient statues busts, heads, reliefs and friezes are kept, is thus a journey into a parallel universe, rich in images and visual inventions animated by color. The series of works in the exhibition captures the echo of remote but universal artistic languages in which color stands as an archaic symbol and, at the same time, connotes a contemporary reality populated with virtual ghosts to live with. Domestic Lares, ancient Heroes and Olympian Deities - ringing in their colors - have found in Iacurci’s canvases the sacred places dedicated to them. And the artist to them offers gifts and asks for protection.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a volume with a text by Michele Bonuomo. For information you can call 02 87225502.
