Uffizi, for Ferragosto a virtual exhibition on the Assumption

To celebrate Ferragosto, or the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, the Uffizi is launching a virtual exhibition specifically on the Assumption.

To celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, the Uffizi Gallery is offering a virtual exhibition on its official website dedicated to Mary’s passage to Heaven, not only in spirit but also in body, as the mother of Christ.

The Palatine Gallery in the Pitti Palace holds two depictions of her: thePanciatichi Assumption and thePasserini Assumption, both works by Andrea del Sarto, created between 1523 and 1526 and among the most spectacular of the great 16th-century Florentine painter.

Curated by Anna Bisceglia, the online exhibition offers a chance to get up close and personal with the two paintings, explaining their iconography, patronage, and passage to the grand ducal collections, accompanying visitors to discover the paintings’ most evocative and curious details, while also revealing the process Andrea del Sarto used in preparing his works.

Along with Andrea del Sarto’s paintings, other depictions of the Assumption of Mary and episodes preceding the event are presented: these include theAngel’s Announcement to Mary in Federico Zuccari ’s engraving and Piero di Cosimo’s splendid Incarnation of Jesus and Saints.

Director Eike Schmidt explains, “The Uffizi Galleries regularly offer virtual exhibitions on major holidays. On the day of Ferragosto, we commemorate the one of the Assumption with a review of high-definition images and explanatory cards: the intent is to induce people to look at sublime works from our collections with a keen eye on the meanings, contents, and execution processes of the artistic artifacts.”
