Villa Giulia dedicates an exhibition to Mario Schifano on the 20th anniversary of his death

The National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia dedicates an exhibition to Mario Schifano on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his death.

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the death of Mario Schifano, one of the greatest exponents ofcontemporary art, the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia is offering an exhibition dedicated to the artist, entitled EtruSchifano. Mario Schifano at Villa Giulia: a return.

The exhibition, which can be visited from December 13, 2018, to March 10, 2019, is set up in the frescoed rooms of the Villa’s main floor: the Sette Colli room will display the cycle of works The Etruscans, consisting of 21 paintings, created in 1991 and now owned by the Pescarabruzzo Foundation in Pescara. This cycle is strongly inspired by the most famous Etruscan funerary paintings, which the artist has reinterpreted in a pop style with brightly colored figures. On display in the Venus Room is a selection of the Mater Matuta cycle of works, inspired by ancient Matres sculptures, two of which belong to the Villa Giulia Museum. The cycle was made in 1995, during a period of strong sensitivity of the artist to social issues such as motherhood, child protection and poverty in the world, and is probably the last pictorial cycle completed by Schifano before his untimely death in 1998.
For the first time, these two cycles are brought together and juxtaposed in one exhibition.

The Hall of the Seven Hills, on the other hand, presents a showcase with documents from Mario Schifano’s personal file kept in the Museum’s Archives and a video with a sequence of photographic images by Marcello Gianvenuti, which refer back to May 16, 1985, the date on which the artist created in just a few hours live an enormous painting of 40 square meters in area, entitled La Chimera.

The Villa Giulia Museum also has ties to Schifano’s biography and art because he worked there from 1951 to 1962 as a restorer and polisher of drawings.

The exhibition is curated by Gianluca Tagliamonte and Maria Paola Guidobaldi, and is sponsored by the Museum of Villa Giulia, the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Salento, the PescarAbruzzo Foundation, the Dr. Domenico Tulino Foundation and the Cultural Association MM18, under the patronage of the Mario Schifano Archive and with contributions from Azienza Agricola Casala del Giglio and Civita.
