Vivian Maier's self-portraits, some previously unpublished, star in an exhibition in Trieste

The Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste welcomes from July 20 to September 22, 2019 the exhibition Vivian Maier, The Self-Portrait and its Double.

The Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste hosts from July 20 to September 22, 2019, for the first time in Italy the exhibition Vivian Maier, The Self-Portrait and its Double.

The exhibition, produced and organized by theFriuli Venezia Giulia Cultural Heritage Authority in collaboration with diChroma photography in Madrid, the John Maloof Collection and Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York, presents seventy self-portraits, eleven of which are in color, never before exhibited in Italy, that tell the story of the famous photographer Vivian Maier (New York, 1926 - Chicago, 2009) who became an icon in the history of photography.

Her recurring themes include street scenes, portraits of strangers, children and, of course, self-portraits-the latter were a search for her identity. In her self-portraits theshadow is often present, which has the ability to make present what is absent.

The exhibition aims to pay tribute to the extraordinary artist, whose talent was discovered after her passing.

“What is surprising in the story of Vivian Maier is how this woman on the one hand accepts her condition as a nanny and, at the same time, instead finds her freedom in being someone else, the street photographer Vivian Maier; this dualism, generated by the clash between the two souls, gave birth to an affair without parallel in the history of photography, which in this exhibition is told for the first time in Italy through the portraits of the author,” says curator Anne Morin.

Unpublished in the exhibition are color images, taken with a Leica in the early 1970s; a camera that was light and easy to carry and allowed shooting directly at eye level.

Also present is a series of super 8mm films by Vivian Maier herself. In 1960 the artist began filming street scenes, events and places: she films what brings her to the photographic image, observing the subject, stopping and following it; zooming in with the lens to get closer without getting physically close. Her cinematic approach is closely related to her language as a photographer.
