When Frida Kahlo fell in love with Nickolas Muray. At Stupinigi the photographer's shots.

The Palazzina di Caccia in Stupinigi is hosting the exhibition Frida Kahlo through the lens of Nickolas Muray from February 1 to May 3, 2020.

From February 1 to May 3, 2020, the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi will host a photographic exhibition entitled Frida Kahlo through the lens of Nickolas Muray; presented by Next Exhibition and ONO contemporary art, the show aims to provide an intimate and private look at the celebrated Mexican artist Frida Kahlo through the shots of her longtime friend and lover Nickolas Muray.

The two met almost by chance thanks to Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias: the latter had come to New York in 1923 on a six-month scholarship offered by the government of Mexico and, shortly thereafter, began working for Vanity Fair. Muray and Covarrubias soon became friends. In 1931 the photographer spent a vacation in Mexico with Covarrubias and his wife Rosa, and since the friend had been a student of Diego Rivera, a meeting between Frida Kahlo and Nickolas Muray was inevitable.

After their first meeting, Frida wrote a love note to Muray and they began a love affair that lasted for ten years, but their friendship lasted until his death in 1954. During the course of their relationship, from 1937 to 1946, the photographer immortalized her in his shots that present a unique perspective of Frida; they are also significant for Muray’s quality as a portraitist and as a master of color photography, a pioneering field in those years. These images also show the Mexican artist’s deep interest in her culture, her life and the people associated with her.

Thus, sixty photographs taken by Nickolas Muray are on view to the public in the exhibition, chronicling Frida Kahlo’s professional and personal journey, starting from the 1937 shots in Tizapán to the 1948 shots in Pedregal and Coyoacán. Some of the artist’s most important photographs were taken during this period, such as those taken in 1939 in muray’s studio and in 1946 in New York.

The introductory part of the exhibition will offer amultimedia immersion in the artist’s feelings and emotions. And there will also be reproductions of environments, Mexican clothing, jewelry and love letters between the photographer and Frida.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Tickets: Full 14 euros, reduced 12 euros. Free for children under 6. Those who present a ticket to visit the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi can enter the exhibition at a discounted price of 10 euros.
