The Ministry of Culture has launched the public selection process for the appointment of directors of 14 second-rank state cultural institutes. Following the recent appointment of first-rank directors and 140 second-rank managers, comes now the call for applications for EU nationals with proven experience in the management and enhancement of cultural heritage.
The institutes involved are the Historical Museum and Park of the Castle of Miramare (Regional Directorate National Museums Friuli-Venezia Giulia), the Monumental Complex of the Pilotta (Parma), the National Museums of Bologna (Regional Directorate National Museums Emilia-Romagna), the National Museums of Lucca, the Pantheon and Castel Sant’Angelo (Directorate National Museums of the city of Rome), the Archaeological Park of the Appia Antica, Villa Adriana and Villa D’Este, the Monumental Villas of Tuscia, the Royal Palace of Naples, the National Museums of Vomero, the Archaeological Museums and Parks of Capri, the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, the Swabian Castle of Bari (National Museums Regional Directorate Puglia) and the National Museums of Matera (National Museums Regional Directorate Basilicata).
The call for applications states that each candidate may compete for up to five institutions from those listed. Requirements include a high level of professional qualification, documented through experience in the management of cultural institutes and places, or in the management of facilities and entities, public or private, active in the cultural sector.
The application must be submitted exclusively online through the Ministry of Culture portal(https://servizi.cultura.gov.it/) by noon on Sept. 8, 2025. Completion of the prescribed form is required, attaching a concise curriculum vitae, a motivational letter of up to 1,000 words for each chosen institution, and a report of up to four pages detailing professional experiences, with start and end dates, activities carried out and results achieved.
There are limitations based on the principle of rotation of appointments: those who have already held a renewed managerial position in an autonomous institute will not be able to apply again for the same location, but may apply for other institutes subject to selection.
The procedure includes a preliminary verification of requirements by the Technical Secretariat appointed by the Director General Human Resources and Organization. Successful candidates will be evaluated by a Commission appointed by Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli on the basis of additional qualifications, experience in conservation, protection and enhancement of heritage, direction of museums and cultural institutions, complexity of the structures managed, innovation, communication, fundraising, institutional relations, technological skills, language and legislative knowledge. Particular emphasis will be placed on proven professional qualifications in the field of cultural heritage enhancement and protection and experience in the management of cultural institutions and places.
Ten candidates will be selected for each institute and will undergo an interview by November 2025 at the Ministry’s headquarters in Via del Collegio Romano in Rome. The interview will cover design and management of the institute, technical, economic and legal aspects, as well as verification of English proficiency. Non-Italian EU candidates will have to demonstrate a knowledge of Italian of at least B2 level, unless exempted for those who have worked in the past four years in an Italian public administration.
At the end of the interviews, a shortlist of three names, accompanied by summary judgment, will be identified for each institution and forwarded to the Director General for Museums. The latter, based on the Commission’s evaluations, will decide whether to make the appointment or, giving reasons for the decision, refrain from making it.
The director’s appointment will be for four years and may be renewed in case of positive evaluation of the results. The procedure must be completed by December 15, 2025.
