Great success for the Lella and Fausto Bertinotti Collection at auction at Finarte's

Great success and more than a thousand participants for Finarte's Modern and Contemporary Art auction that ended July 3. Particularly attracting interest was the Lella and Fausto Bertinotti Collection, which quadrupled its initial estimates.

TheModern and Contemporary Art Auction concluded on July 3 at Finarte’s historic Milan headquarters, registering considerable success and exceptional international participation. More than a thousand enthusiasts and collectors from all over the world took part in the event, contributing to total proceeds of about 2.2 million euros.

Particular enthusiasm was aroused by the Lella and Fausto Bertinotti Collection, which with 21 lots sold out of 24 generated more than 300,000 euros, quadrupling initial estimates. Of great note were Andy Warhol ’s famous 1972 Mao silkscreens (Lots 40 and 41), both estimated at between 20,000 and 30,000 euros: thanks to intense competition among the room, telephone, online and written bids, they sold for 133,000 euros and 101,000 euros, respectively.

In addition to Warhol’s works, the collection offered a selection of pieces of significant historical and artistic value: among them, two works by Piero Dorazio (Lot 32, sold for 7,000 euros), Camion, a painting by Titina Maselli (Lot 39, sold for 11,500 euros), and the sculpture La gabbia d’oro by Giosetta Fioroni (Lot 44, sold for 16,500 euros).

Also extraordinary was the adjudication of the work I Bagni Misteriosi, an oil on canvas made in 1935 by Giorgio de Chirico (Lot 78), from the collection of Monica Vitti. The work sold for 468,000 euros, one of the best auction results ever for the artist in Italy.

Among the most notable adjudications were three works that were very different in style, but shared the spirit of innovation and research that distinguishes them, between abstraction and matter: Combustione (1968) by Alberto Burri (Lot 115, fetched 103,500 euros); Ritmo su fondo bianco (1953) by Osvaldo Licini (Lot 125, sold for 48,000 euros); and Senza titolo (1972) by Wifredo Lam (Lot 94, sold for 51,000 euros).

“We are happy with the results obtained from the auction and the great attention received even from foreign collectors. The great success of the Bertinotti collection and Giorgio de Chirico’s Mysterious Baths from the collection of Monica Vitti will remain in our memory for a long time,” said Georgia Bava, Head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art Rome.

“This sale ideally closes a particular semester characterized by unfavorable geopolitical instability, and the result of the auction confirms to us that contemporary art is perceived as a safe haven asset and as an alternative form of investment,” added Alessandro Cuomo, Head of Department of Modern and Contemporary Art Milan.

“For the success of the sale, the promotional work, carried out in recent months with events and previews also in Rome at the Circolo Canottieri and in Naples at the Hotel de Bonart, with which Finarte has finalized collaboration agreements, was decisive. These moments of meeting with collectors have helped to strengthen the dialogue with the public and enhanced the works in the catalog,” said Alessandro Guerrini, Finarte CEO.
