200 years deciphering hieroglyphs: Egyptian Museum opens for free and displays restored Papyrus of Kings


Today marks the bicentennial of the decipherment of hieroglyphics, and the Egyptian Museum in Turin is celebrating with a free evening opening. A new reconstruction and restoration of the Papyrus of Kings will be on view.

To mark the bicentenary of the deciphering of hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion, the father ofEgyptology, the Egyptian Museum of Turin will open its doors to the public free of charge on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 7 to 10 p.m. with online reservations required on the museum’s website.

Visitors will also be able to see a new reconstruction and restoration of the Papyrus of Kings, displayed inside a room equipped with multimedia tools and infographics to understand the history and contents of the famous document.

Also available on Tuesday, Sept. 27, is an exclusive tour dedicated to Egyptian writing entitled In the Footsteps of Champollion. Amidst stelae, papyri, statues, sarcophagi and everyday objects, under the guidance of the Egyptologist, visitors will have the opportunity to discover hieroglyphics and learn how to look for recurring names and formulas in the inscriptions. For the occasion, the emblematic moments of the decipherment adventure by J.F. Champollion will be recalled and the restoration of the Papyrus of Kings will be on view.

At 6 p.m., the History, Content and Restoration of the so-called Turin King List lecture is also scheduled, dedicated to the restoration and rearrangement of the Papyrus of Kings that took place in 2022. The event is by reservation free of charge, in English with simultaneous translation into Italian.
