An ignorant and boorish racist roams Naples' MANN. Video of the social experiment is a must-see

Naples' MANN kicks off its 'A Wolf at the Museum' series of social experiments on the themes of racism, bullying, and censorship.

The National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) released this morning the first video in the series A Wolf at the Museum, conceived by Ugo Capolupo (Neapolitan author, actor and director) in collaboration with the institution: it is a social experiment filmed in the halls of the museum. The expression “social experiment” refers to a kind of candid camera aimed at testing the reactions of ordinary people in front of a certain behavior staged by actors: it is a form of entertainment that is very popular on the web, especially among younger people.

In this case, Ugo Capolupo went to the MANN, to the room that houses the very famous mosaic of the Battle of Issus, and pretended to be a racist ready to attack museum visitors to the sound of boorish and ignorant stereotypes: the invasion of Islamists, Alexander the Great who would have “kicked out the Muslims” (!) otherwise they would be in charge today, and so on. As in any social experiment, at the end all the people involved were revealed to be facing actors who were acting, and they were asked for their consent to the dissemination of their image in the video for educational purposes.

The series A Wolf at the Museum focuses on ethical issues such as combating racism, bullying, and censorship, and the videos will be posted on the museum’s Facebook page(you can find the first one at this link). The format, created in an experimental phase as part of projects curated by Ludovico Solima (University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”) on the use of new languages of digital communication, was presented at MANN to a group of university professors and students (Department of Sociology and Department of Communication Sciences) as part of a workshop, which, last January, was attended by Antonio Lampis (General Director of Museums of Mibact) and Paolo Giulierini (Director of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples). The theme song for the video series was created by Alessandro Rak.

Ugo Capolupo, for several years, has been working on the “grammar” and popularization of social experiments: excellent response to the video cycle Ai confini della Realtà, made with Fanpage.it and particularly appreciated by Youtube users (among the top 10 of the platform in 2018).
