Berlin, the city's first neo-Gothic church reopens after eight years with a new layout

The Friedrichswerdersche Kirche, the city's first neo-Gothic church, reopens to the public after eight years with a new permanent sculpture exhibition.

After eight years, the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche, a deconsecrated church in Berlin’s Mitte district that has been placed under monument protection because it is the first neo-Gothic church built in the German capital, reopens to the public. A new permanent exhibition has been set up inside, which visitors will finally be able to admire.

The building was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built between 1824 and 1830; it has been a museum church since 1987 and has become a branch of theAlte Nationalgalerie. The permanent exhibition, entitled Ideal and Form. 19th-Century Sculptures from the Nationalgalerie’s Collection, aims to trace the development of sculpture from the 19th century to the modern age through splendid sculptures, and intends to present the Berlin school of sculpture, which was already oriented toward internationalization at the time.

In an architecture that has been largely preserved in its original form, characterized by ever-changing light, the public has the opportunity to immerse itself among 19th-century sculptures: among the highlights on display are the plaster portrait of Princess Friederike of Prussia by Johann Gottfried Schadow, masterpieces by Heinrich Kümmel, Adolf von Hildebrand, and Reinhold Begas, and busts completed by artists such as Thorvaldsen, Anna von Kahle, and Elisabet Ney.
The Nationalgalerie’s sculptures constitute the most comprehensive collection of 19th-century sculptural art, and for this reason they enjoy a prominent position in the German museum scene.

The Friedrichswerdersche Kirche is accessible Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
