François Hébel is the new Artistic Director of CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography in Turin. He succeeds Walter Guadagnini, who has led the Turin institution since 2016.

François Hébel is the new Artistic Director of CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography in Turin. The appointment was announced on October 1, 2025 by the Board of Directors, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Turin institution. Hébel will take office on Nov. 1, 2025, succeeding Walter Guadagnini, who has led the artistic direction of CAMERA, a point of reference for photography in the Piedmontese capital, since 2016.

With this appointment, CAMERA confirms its identity and opens a new phase of development, aiming to further strengthen its role on the international cultural scene.

"First of all, I would like to express the most sincere and deepest gratitude to Walter Guadagnini. We have shared an extraordinary journey with him: he has given solidity to the structure, increased the credibility of the institution and accompanied it in a steady growth to make it an undisputed point of reference for photography in Italy. To him and the CAMERA team goes our heartfelt thanks, said Emanuele Chieli, President of CAMERA. “The choice of François Hébel represents an important step for the future of CAMERA: with his artistic direction a new phase opens, which will allow us to strengthen CAMERA’s international vocation and bring our experience to an even wider stage.”

“These have been intense and satisfying years, in which together with the CAMERA team we have worked to bring the general public closer to photography and the image. We have built paths that have made it possible to learn about and explore the great authors of the past, but also to discover and support the new generations that are imagining and interpreting the photography of the future,” said Walter Guadagnini. “Looking back, I can only be proud of what has been achieved: today CAMERA is recognized as a solid and authoritative center. I am happy to pass this baton to François Hébel, whose experience and vision will open new international perspectives for the institution.”

“Joining CAMERA at a symbolic moment like the 10-year anniversary celebration is an honor and a responsibility. In just ten years, the institution has been able to build a clear, inclusive and high quality identity, and has already established significant international relationships with prestigious museums, festivals and archives,” commented newly appointed Artistic Director François Hébel. “I want to express my appreciation to Walter Guadagnini for the important work he has done so far and to thank him, together with the President and the Board of Directors, for the trust they have placed in me. My ambition is to further develop CAMERA’s international network, opening new dialogues and strengthening its presence on the world stage. Photography is a universal language and CAMERA has all the potential to continue to tell its story strongly, in Turin and far beyond Italian borders.”
