The Cini Foundation announces a transition in the structure of theInstitute of Art History. As of September 1, 2026, Antonio Mazzotta, an associate professor at the University of Milan, will assume the role of director of the Institute, while Luca Massimo Barbero will become its president. Mazzotta’s appointment is part of the Institute’s evolutionary path and aims to ensure an ongoing presence in Venice, with the goal of developing new in-depth and research initiatives. Mazzotta, born in Milan in 1983, has consolidated relationships with Venice over time, including through training between the University of Milan and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. An associate professor at the Milan university, he is a specialist in Renaissance art with a particular focus on the Venetian context. He has published essays and articles in international journals and several monographs, including a study devoted to Giovanni Bellini. He has also curated exhibitions on artists such as Titian, Michelangelo, and Andrea Solario at venues such as the National Gallery in London, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, and the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan.
At the same time, Luca Massimo Barbero assumes the presidency of the Institute with the intention of expanding its offerings and research activities through the consolidation of contacts and relationships at the national and international level, so as to ensure new projects while respecting the continuity of the institution. Born in Turin in 1963, an art historian and critic, Barbero is associate curator of Intesa Sanpaolo’s Collections of Modern and Contemporary Art, a member of the scientific committee of the Farnesina Collection and scientific advisor of the Lucio Fontana Foundation, and former associate curator of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
Over the course of his career he has collaborated with some of the leading institutions of modern and contemporary art in Italy and abroad, curating exhibitions at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Prada Rong Zhai Foundation in Shanghai, the Hōseki Pop-up Gallery in Hangzhou and the Venice Biennale. Considered among the leading scholars on Italian and American art after World War II, he is the author of numerous publications devoted to contemporary art and catalogs raisonné.
