Comics come to museums: Franceschini unveils new project for Italian museums

Comic books come to museums: a project to create 22 stories set in as many Italian museums is presented in Rome.

The Fumetti nei Musei project was presented this morning in Rome, at the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica and in the presence of Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini: some of Italy ’s most celebrated cartoonists will create twenty-two graphic novels that will be destined for the educational services of twenty of the thirty autonomous museums, which will be joined by the Colosseum and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The project was conceived by the MiBACT press and communications office, is being carried out in collaboration with Coconino Press-Fandango and with the support of Ales SpA, the MiBACT Center for Educational Services and the General Directorate for Museums. The aim is to bring children closer to Italy’s museum heritage through comic stories that will take their cues from the works preserved in museums.

The project, a true comic book series, is the brainchild of Italian museum directors and some leading cartoonists. At the same time, an exhibition has started at the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, displaying all the covers of the albums, a selection of the plates, as well as sketches and original sketches by the artists. The exhibition runs from February 21 to April 1, and at the end of the exhibition the original prints will become part of the Central Institute for Graphic Design’s holdings. A video including a slideshow of some of the plates created as part of the project is available on YouTube.
