Closed since 2012 due to earthquake damage, the Museum of the Jewish Community of Ferrara, housed in the Palace of the Three Ancient Synagogues in Via Mazzini 95, will be reborn with the support of the Emilia Romagna Region. The special project, which includes, in addition to seismic safety, the creation of new historical-cultural and conceptual itineraries and exhibition layouts to enhance the precious ancient objects and important historical documents preserved, will in fact be fully financed by the Emilia Romagna Region with a total contribution of 335,000 euros. For the implementation of the intervention, the Region will enter into an agreement with the Jewish Community of Ferrara in which the criteria, methods and timing of implementation will be established, as provided by the regional sector law, Regional Law 7 of 2020.

The funding granted by the region will allow the exhibition enhancement of the entire building, its halls and its three Synagogues, with the complete reorganization of the internal routes, the elimination of architectural barriers and the construction of a new lighting system. The new museum itinerary, with extensive multimedia technological equipment, will also present several “in-depth areas,” which will be enriched thanks to the activity of cataloging and systematizing all the documents, objects and places of the Jewish presence in Ferrara, currently scattered in various private funds and public archives.

An international research group dedicated to the study of the diaspora and the Jewish presence in Ferrara over the six centuries of its history will also be activated. In addition to the extensive display of artistic objects of worship and life and historical documents, it is intended to implement the collection with new and additional elements that will enrich, above all, the system of territorial relations and cultural influences, through an in-depth study of the contribution made by Jews to the arts in the 20th century.

The work is scheduled for completion in April 2025.
