Florence, the Volterrano Quarter reopens at the Pitti Palace after months

At the Pitti Palace, the Volterrano Quarter, which houses some of the most beautiful rooms in the Medici palace, reopens after months of work.

After several months of work and restoration, the Quartiere del Volterrano, the wing of the Medici palace named after the frescoes painted here by Baldassarre Franceschini known as il Volterrano (Volterra, 1611 - Florence, 1689), reopens today at the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace in Florence.

There are five rooms that return to be visited starting today: the Sala delle Allegorie, where one of Volterrano’s most famous paintings, the Burla del pievano Arlotto, is housed, as well as Emilio Zocchi’s 19th-century marble depicting Michelangelo as a child; the Sala delle Belle Arti, which houses Pieter Paul RubensRisen Christ; the Sala di Ercole (accessible to the public for the first time), which takes its name from the large frescoes by neoclassical painter Pietro Benvenuti that narrate the Labors of Hercules; the Ark Room, where the walls are decorated with the Procession led by King David with the Ark of the Covenant, a work by Luigi Ademollo (the room overlooks the Chapel of Relics, a secluded space intended for the Grand Duchess’s private devotion); and the Music Room, through which it is possible to reconnect to the Palatine Gallery’s normal visiting itinerary.

“The new itinerary, which is strictly one-way,” says Maurizio Catolfi, head of the Operations Division and Security Department of the Uffizi Galleries, “has been designed and set up in full compliance with the anti-contagious provisions and allows for the first time to visit a part of the Volterrano district with an unusual and unprecedented itinerary.”
