Herculaneum Archaeological Park also opens a Digital Museum

The Herculaneum Archaeological Park is working to create its own Digital Museum, a resource that will make available a wealth of data, 3D models, high-resolution photos, documents, and will allow everyone to create their own personalized itinerary in the

The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum is about to bring to life the Digital Museum (MuDE), which the Campania-based institute calls a “true digital ecosystem of cultural heritage,” which will be based on the integration of real and virtual with the aim of capturing the interest of new audiences and making the experience of visiting even more interesting for those who are already passionate about history and archaeology. The MuDe will include an “open” database of knowledge about Herculaneum’s heritage, both scientifically and for a lay audience. The intent, the park says, is to substantially expand the park’s cultural offerings, as well as to make accessible a large amount of structured data, floor plans, 3-D models, virtual reconstructions, high-resolution photographs, archival documentation and scientific content.

A service contract has been signed these days that kicks off the activities of the MuDE (Digital Museum of Herculaneum), the design of which was carried out by the Packard Humanities Institute thanks to the virtuous collaboration with the Herculaneum Park against European funding for digitization from the Ministry of Culture.

Users will be able to dynamically access all available information on a topic, artifact or archaeological context through links on the information of their interest. In fact, the MuDE platform will allow each user to build his or her own virtual or real thematic itinerary within the archaeological area. Technology, interoperability of data and more generally of knowledge, enhancement of the territory, services for citizens, employment prospects for those working in the field, and sustainable and inclusive development are the goals at which the entire project aims.

“We are kicking off another project resulting from the valuable collaboration with the Packard Humanities Institute,” says Herculaneum’s PArco director Francesco Sirano. “Myth with the future around it. This is the claim of the Park that welcomes everyone who enters the archaeological area. MuDE is a decisive step in this direction. We want to project the heritage of Herculaneum into the network according to not alternative but convergent principles of fruition. The MuDE envisions the digitization not only of the collections of artifacts from Herculaneum within a common virtual space, but also (as far as possible) of the contexts in which they were found during the centuries-long history of exploration from the 18th to the 21st century. A space within which to preserve, manage, promote but above all explore knowledge of the archaeological site in innovative and personalized ways. Herculaneum has been committed to an open approach for years, and the MuDE represents a decisive step forward , where through the scientific work of digitization (with its entire chain, from planning, to protection, to preservation) space is given to interaction. MuDE will also be this: revolutionizing the role of the community, which will not be treated as ’users’ but as protagonists of the knowledge experience.”

In fact, the MuDE wants to be a decisive advancement of a path aimed at the creation of a digital ecosystem for culture that the Park has been pursuing for years, both with its own initiatives shared with HCP staff (Herculaneum 3D Scan, the social series Lapilli and Magma) and as part of scale projects such as Move to Cloud, funded by the Campania Region.
