Lorenzo D'Alessandro's Pieta on display for 5 years at the National Gallery of the Marches

Lorenzo D'Alessandro's Pieta will be on display for five years at the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche. The Boris Christoff Foundation has granted it to the museum on a five-year loan.

Associated with theAccademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Boris Christoff Foundation has granted the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche a five-year loan of La Pietà by Lorenzo D’Alessandro. Born in San Severino Marche in about 1455, and for this reason nicknamed “Il Severinate,” the artist painted this small panel in tempera.

The loan represents a significant cultural enrichment for the museum venue. In particular, the return of Lorenzo d’Alessandro’s panel to the region is even more valuable given the loss of many of his paintings. Within its catalog, La Pietà is configured as awork-document revealing important news, such as the name of the commissioner, Friar Matteo da Sanseverino, and the date of its completion, 1491, inscribed in the edge of the sarcophagus.

The work tells of the artist’s full maturity and, on stylistic analysis, some archaizing aspects such as the gilded background are well captured. At the same time, the Umbrian-Cameroon training is enriched by the language of Carlo Crivelli and a more modern Venetian component, between Giovanni Bellini and the Vivarini. The precious panel is characterized by the Virgin’s sweet embrace of the Child, depicted in the luminous and delicate harmony of colors.

The work is already on public display in the Sala dei Veneti, the first room of the Appartamento degli Ospiti on the main floor of the Ducal Palace.
