Mudec recounts Tina Modotti, among the greatest photographers ever, on social media

On Mudec's social channels, a video documentary chronicles the life and work of Tina Modotti, one of the greatest photographers ever.

It ends with Tina Modotti the video miniseries 10 x 10 Ten stories for ten women who changed the history of photography on Mudec’s social channels. In fact, every Saturday the museum launched on its Facebook, Instagram and YouTube profiles ten mini-video documentaries that told the lives of ten great protagonists of the history of photography. A project curated by Nicolas Bellario that is part of the 2020-2021 program schedule related to women’s creativity The Talents of Women of the City of Milan.

The last appointment is then dedicated to the life and work of Tina Modotti, protagonist of the exhibition Tina Modotti. Women, Mexico and Freedom soon to open at Mudec Photo.

Her life began in Udine in 1896. Her father emigrated to the United States, and in 1913 Tina joined him in San Francisco, where she began working in a textile factory. San Francisco is a stimulating city preparing to inaugurate the great Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. In the California city Tina experiences a period of cultural fertility, meeting great artists and intellectuals.

In 1923 she decided to move with photographer Edward Weston to Mexico, where an extraordinary post-revolutionary cultural renaissance was fermenting in those years. Between 1923 and 1926 she began her work as a photographer alongside Weston. Initially she focused on still life, particularly flowers, and studied photographic composition with an emphasis on light. She then joined the Communist Party and her photography turned into social narrative. She photographs Mexican society, workers, campesinos, and women, becoming a cultural and intellectual reference point for Mexico: each of her photographs becomes a symbol of an era.

Tina Modotti was able to “image” her ideals and political commitment. Although she practiced her art for only a few years, she is universally recognized as one of the greatest photographers ever.

Starting February 22, a podcast will be born from this series of ten videos: the video-documentaries will continue their popularizing mission in the form of audio-documentaries through podcasts and will be available on Spotify and Apple Podcast platforms.
