Paestum like the Uffizi: in 2019 comes the ticket with variable price in high and low season

Paestum like the Uffizi: at the Archaeological Park introduced the ticket with variable price according to high or low season.

After the Uffizi Galleries, the first museum complex to introduce a ticket with a variable price in high and low season, the Archaeological Park of Paestum is also getting a similar access ticket: it is therefore the first museum in the South to adopt the “dynamic ticket.” The measure was created with the aim of generating more revenue for the preservation and enhancement of the archaeological site and at the same time guaranteeing more free admission for citizens who are heritage users, as also advocated by Minister Alberto Bonisoli.

The new ticket will come into effect on January 1, 2019: from December to February, the period of low attendance, people will pay half, while in the high season months the ticket will be increased. The suggestion comes from faculty members of Bocconi’s master’s program in Cultural Heritage Management, who have been working with the Magna-Greek site for some time and have analyzed the case of the Uffizi. “By now we are all used to dealing with dynamic pricing when it comes to buying a product online, an airline ticket or booking a hotel room,” explains Andrea Rurale, a Bocconi lecturer. “Similarly, entrance fees to museums can go up or down depending on what’s there to see or the season of the year.”

The goal, in the words of the director of the Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, is to reinforce the presence and participation of residents and make the site increasingly a cultural and social center of the area: “in the same vein, we have also set free admission days. Every Thursday from 6 p.m. you can enter the archaeological area and the museum for free.”

The new annual ticket, established three years ago as part of the autonomous management of the Paestum site, has also been adopted to the new requirements. The cost, as the director announced, will be “symbolic”: “one euro more than the normal ticket. This means: with one more symbolic euro our ticket becomes annual.” Flow analysis has shown that at the Paestum site, located in a rural area, few visitors return more than once a year. With the new annual ticket, therefore, park management hopes to increase both admissions and sales of the annual pass, which previously cost €25.00 while now it will be lowered to €13.00.
